Job Description:
The controller is responsible for the operations and employees of the accounting department, which includes but is not limited to the preparation of financial statements, the maintenance of the accounting system and the monitoring of internal control policies and procedures.
Detail of daily activities:
• Ensure that appropriate supporting documentation and audit trail are maintained for all accounting transactions
• Provide technical support to the accounting department for the Sage ACCPAC accounting system
• Identify weaknesses in internal controls policies and procedures and suggest to the Board new policies to implement in order to strengthen the internal control environment
• Implement new internal controls identified by the Board
• Meet with the VP of Finance at least twice a week to provide an update of all issues pertaining to the Accounting department
• Discuss any fiscal issue with the Group’s fiscal expert
• Provide technical accounting support to the accounting clerks in their daily activities, which includes but is not limited to the preparation of the daily deposit reports, the bank reconciliations and any other report or accounting activity.
Detail of weeky activities:
Note : Weekly Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Sessions will take place every Saturday from 8am to 10am, which will either be instructed or co-instructed by the Controller.
• Weekly Continuing Professional Education sessions
• Daily coaching for the accounting department clerks
• Preparation of the training material for the weekly CPE sessions with the assistance of the VP of finance
Detail of monthly activities:
• Closing of the books before the 10th of each month
• Verify that payroll was properly funded before the end of the month and is paid on time on the 1st of the month
• Verify that all bonds and interests are properly paid on time every month
• Review and sign off on bank reconciliations monthly
• Review the AR aging and prepare an allowance for doubtful accounts monthly. Write off any bad debt approved by the Board
• Review the AP aging et ensure that older balances are being paid first and in a timely fashion
• Perform monthly analytical procedures over financial reports to ensure their reasonableness
• Prepare monthly financial reports for each of the 8 corporations as well as a consolidated report
• Prepare annual financial reports before March 30th for each of the 8 corporations as well as a consolidated report
• Calculate the monthly financial ratios deemed relevant by the Board
Job Qualifications:
Required Education, Experience and Skill Set
• College education
• Accounting certification such as CPA, CPAH, CA, CMA
• At least 5 years of experience as a controller or CFO and 10 years in the workforce
• At least 7 years of experience with Sage ACCPAC (user experience and implementation, if possible)
• Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Power Point
Language requirements
• Fluency in English : reading, writing and speaking
• Fluency in French : reading, writing and speaking
